SPSA Statement Following General Assembly Bill Introductions
(January 10, 2007; Chesapeake, Virginia) -- The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) is aware of two study bills that have been introduced in the Virginia General Assembly by one of Chesapeake’s General Assembly representatives. They request reviews of certain aspects of SPSA’s solid waste management system. SPSA is a public agency and welcomes involvement by the General Assembly in the study of the operations and management of this regional solid waste disposal system.
There are similar activities at the local level however, addressing the current operations of SPSA. These activities include the SPSA Board of Directors’ recent action to restructure the waste management agency and separately, a review commissioned by the region’s City Managers and County Administrators. SPSA has always opened its doors to public review of its operations and will continue to cooperate with the State’s activities and others seeking long-term improvement to the management of the region’s waste.
SPSA cannot comment on other solid waste management bills introduced that are involved in pending litigation.

SPSA has been providing
efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region
and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system
includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside
recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste
collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs.
This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the
waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce
its dependence on landfills.
