SPSA’s Website Gives Residents the 4-1-1 on Hurricane Preparedness

(July 16, 2007 Chesapeake, VA) – With hurricane season underway, SPSA is reminding residents that there is a wealth of information regarding solid waste collection, disposal and recycling before, during and after a hurricane on www.spsa.com. Click on the “Prepare for Emergencies” link and visitors will find SPSA’s comprehensive emergency response instructions.
At the website, there are guidelines for citizens with regard to facility availability and links to emergency management websites for the various communities within SPSA’s jurisdiction. There is also pertinent information for waste haulers and SPSA’s municipal customers. For example, immediately before and after a storm, SPSA may have to suspend operations to only its municipal customers for the protection of the health, safety and welfare of the communities in general.
“We encourage residents, waste haulers and our municipal governments to review this section before a hurricane or natural disaster,” said Louie Jordan, Deputy Executive Director for Operations. “By reviewing this information before a storm strikes, they will be better prepared.”
For more information, contact SPSA at (757) 420-4700.

SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
