CREATIVE LEARNING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

GAMES, PICTURES, LIVELY BANTER ABOUT WORLD AROUND THEM
GET YOUNG STUDENTS TALKING “TRASH” – AND CLEAN WATER, TOO

WHAT and WHO: Students from Richard Bowling Elementary School in Norfolk, under the wing of environmental educator Beth Garrison from SPSA, participate in a lively learning session about the inter-relatedness of water, land and sky – and how the food they eat is dependent on animals and plants living in a world as free of pollution as possible.  Ms. Garrison uses animal images, recycling props, colorful maps and other devices to illustrate the importance of caring about one’s surroundings, in a talk called “Talking Trash: Waste in Our Watershed.”

WHERE and WHEN: Classes at Richard Bowling Elementary, 2861 East Princess Anne Road, on Wednesday, October 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.

WHY: This is an opportunity for a lively and highly visual story about a new tack on a serious subject – and one considered more and more important for children in early grades to learn.  Ms. Garrison’s energetic and knowledgeable manner stimulates discussion and active responses. She, teachers and students will be available for comments and pictures.

HOW: To assure access to the programs, contact Felicia W. Blow at 420-4700.

SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
