Request for Community Support

SPSA values its participation and involvement in numerous regional community environmental protection and beautification activities. SPSA annually sponsors several activities itself, but also works with other organizations as part of SPSA’s ongoing community outreach efforts. In addition however, there are one-time activities wherein SPSA support may be requested. For this purpose, SPSA has initiated a more formal program and asks that requesters utilize the attached application to request support from SPSA for one-time environmental community activities.  SPSA does not provide direct financial support and also has other program limitations. Earth Action Day

SPSA along with the cities of Franklin, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth and the counties of Isle of Wight and Southampton are spearheading an Action Earth Day on Saturday, April 22.  On the national celebration of Earth Day each of these communities are asking residents to volunteer for three hours of “earth action” cleanup events. Each community has a designated coordinator that is handling volunteers and the clean-up.

In addition, the volunteers are going to try to meet or beat a Guinness Book of World Records by collecting 120 tons of litter by volunteers on a single day.

Below is a listing of clean-up locations that are happening on Action Earth Day.  Please contact the site coordinator to sign up for a locality or for more information.

Franklin
Please contact Jeff Turner with the Blackwater River Keepers at (757) 562-5173 for more information about cleanups in Franklin.  The following are the designated clean up sites for Franklin:

  • Armory ditch area
  • Wal-Mart & Kangaroo ditch area

Isle of Wight
Please contact Don Richardson with Isle of Wight County Public Works at (757) 357-3191 for more information about cleanups in Isle of Wight. The following are the designated clean up sites for Isle of Wight:

  • Walters Highway (between Burdette Road and River Run Trail)
  • Carroll Bridge Road (between Woodland Road and Bowling Green Road)
  • Smith's Neck Road (between Boundary Road and Titus Creek Drive)
  • Nike Park Road.

Norfolk
Please contact Nicole Dutil with Keep Norfolk Beautiful at (757) 441-1347 for more information about cleanups in Norfolk.  The following are the designated clean up sites for Norfolk:

  • Wayne Creek
  • Berkeley

Portsmouth
Please contact Claudia Cox-Wynn with the Portsmouth Clean Community Commission at (757) 393-5628 for more information about cleanups in Portsmouth.  The following are the designated clean up sites for Portsmouth:

  • Brighton – The headquarters will be at Brighton Rock AME Zion Church, at Oak Street and Centre Ave.

Southampton County

  • Cypress Bridge Rt 742 near Courtland

  • Delaware Road/Round-Gut

Suffolk
Please contact Angie Mills with the Suffolk Clean Community Commission at (757) 923-2143 for more information about cleanups in Suffolk.  The following are the designated clean up sites for Suffolk:

  • Kings Fork Middle and High Schools located on Kings Fork Road near Godwin Boulevard Rt 10. 
  • Magnolia Park off of Rt. 17 (Bridge Rd.)
