Below you will find step-by step direction on applying for a position with SPSA. Be sure to read each step carefully and complete all the necessary forms associated with your application. Failure to complete the forms or follow the below procedures, may result in your application not being processed or being disqualified.
Step 1: Review the vacancies
SPSA vacancies are posted for a specific period of time. They are generally posted for four (4) consecutive days, usually beginning on Monday and ending on Thursday, except for holiday weeks. SPSA will only accept applications for those posted positions during that specified time. Applications received after the closing date will not be processed. Unsolicited applications/resumes (those sent for vacancies not currently posted) will be returned. Be sure to note the posting dates for each position on the vacancy listing.

Step 2: Complete the application
Once you determine you would like to apply for a posted vacancy, you will need to complete an SPSA application and other related materials. An application must be completed for each position you wish to apply for. A cover letter, resume, and/or transcript is optional unless otherwise noted in the posting.

Please Note: Read all instructions printed on the front of the application and be sure to thoroughly complete your application.

Resumes may be included as additional information but may not be substituted for completing the employment history section.
- Be brief in completing the Job Duties section by emphasizing major tasks. This section however must clearly indicate how you meet the minimum qualifications listed for the position. Be specific in the Skills Obtained and Equipment Used section.
- Be sure to indicate on application which requisition you are applying for by including the position name and requisition number from the vacancy listing.
- Be sure to sign your application in both locations.
Step 3: Complete the associated forms
Once you've completed the application, you will now need to complete the associated forms.
ADA Form This form is a listing of all the physical and mental requirements for the position and requires your review and signature of understanding. A link to a PDF file is located in the listing on the job opportunities page with its associated vacancy. Click here to return to that page.
Statistical tracking
form is used by SPSA to comply with federal reporting requirements. No
information on this form provided by applicants will be used in the decision
making process nor will it be used for any other reason than statistical
reporting or legal requirements. Click here.

For all driving positions, you must also submit a completed Commercial Drivers Supplement Form. Click here for a printable PDF version. For all driving positions (and others as indicated) you will also need to submit an original DMV record that is no more than 30 days old.

Step 4: Submit your application
Whatever method you chose to use, please remember that applications must be received by 4pm on the posting closing date. Applications received after that time will not be processed.

- Fax fax application to 757-420-6511 to the attention of Human Resources Applications. Faxed applications that are incomplete, unreadable, or do not have clear signatures will not be processed.
- Hand-deliver to Regional Office Building at address above.
Additional Information
It takes approximately 2-3 weeks for the supervisors to review the applications after the closing date. If selected for an interview, you will be called directly by the hiring supervisor. Any inquiries regarding the status of an application or a position can be made to 757-420-4700 or through the Virginia Relay Network for the hearing impaired.
All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a drug screen, physical, employment reference checks, and a criminal background investigation. Failure to complete all steps in the employment process will result in the withdrawal of the employment offer. Falsification of your application or omission of facts material in nature may result in the withdrawal of the employment offer or, if employed, disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
All new employees are required to utilize direct deposit for payroll distribution. In order to start employment, the direct deposit form must be completed. Extended delays will result in the withdrawal of the employment offer.
