Michael W. Johnson
Michael W. Johnson was
appointed County Administrator by the
Southampton County Board of Supervisors on
January 1, 1996. His career in public
service has been exclusively in his native
home of Southampton County where he began
work in 1985. As County Administrator, Mr.
Johnson is the chief administrative officer
for the county, responsible for a $52.4
million annual operating budget, direction
and supervision of all county departments,
and the care and custody of more than $65
million of public property and capital
assets. He has directed and managed more
than $70 million in capital projects over
the course of his career.
Mr. Johnson is a 1982 graduate of Elon
College with a Bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration, and holds certificates from
the Senior Executive Institute at the
University of Virginia and the John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
University. He is recognized as a
Credentialed Manager by the International
City/County Management Association (ICMA),
and is a member of the Virginia Local
Government Management Association (VLGMA),
formerly serving on its Executive Committee.
He has been happily married for more than 25
years to his wife, Debbie, also a
Southampton County native, and they have two
adult children, Ben and Megan. He is an
active runner, beginning most days with a
run at sunrise along the peaceful
countryside of rural Southampton County.
