SPSA Travel Policy Updated

(Chesapeake, VA; February 27, 2007) -- The SPSA travel policy has been updated. Effective immediately, the purchase of alcoholic beverages will not be allowed within the agency. Also, non-travel meal reimbursements generally will not be allowed when only SPSA employees are in attendance.             Finally, the Executive Director or his designee must pre-authorize all out-of-state travel or in-state overnight travel before it is taken.
“None of the SPSA Board members have waste management agency experience and attendance of SWANA conferences allow for education that they otherwise wouldn't get in order to help them in their decision-making processes. Travel to conferences results in learning things that benefit our operations and thus benefit the communities we serve,” says John S. Hadfield, Executive Director. “There also is required travel for our employees to maintain certifications and for other important reasons. Travel will be curtailed for the future, but cannot be eliminated entirely.”

This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
